Empowering Young Minds: The Autism-Friendly DiscoverEU Travel Experience

Understanding the Mission

The Autism-Friendly DiscoverEU project is designed to make travel accessible and enjoyable for young people aged 18–21 with autism and fewer opportunities. The initiative aims to provide a safe and inclusive framework allowing participants to embark on their first multi-day international trip. This journey not only broadens horizons but also fosters independence and confidence.

Project Objectives

• Increased Access: Facilitating mobility for three autistic young individuals through structured preparation and support during their travels.
• Travel Competences: Developing practical skills such as orientation, using public transport, time management, and functional English communication through 'learning by discovery' activities.
• Confidence Building: Strengthening the ability to cope with transitions and unexpected situations, fostering resilience.
• Reflection and Recognition: Utilizing a guided journal and Youthpass to support the reflection of experiences and learning outcomes.
• Community Impact: Disseminating lessons learned to promote inclusive youth mobility at the local level.

Impact on Participants

Through this program, participants are expected to:

• Improve their basic orientation and day planning skills while traveling.
• Master digital tools for transport and maps, enhancing their autonomy.
• Engage in functional communication in practical situations.
• Learn how to cope with changes such as unexpected detours, crowds, and delays.
• Gain increased confidence in their abilities, reducing participation barriers.

Post-Travel Follow-Up

To ensure the sustainability of learning outcomes, each participant will:

• Complete a reflection journal documenting their experiences and competencies acquired.
• Receive a Youthpass certificate recognizing their participation and learning achievements.
• Engage in post-travel activities to support the transfer of skills into everyday life, such as participating in community activities or an internal trip with increased independence.

Strengthening Organizational Capacity

The Autism-Friendly DiscoverEU project will also bolster the organization’s ability to:

• Design and implement inclusive mobility activities.
• Enhance preparation procedures, safety measures, and risk management strategies.
• Utilize effective non-formal learning methods and evaluation tools.

Community Benefits and Future Directions

By actively disseminating the lessons learned and promoting a replicable model for first-time mobility experiences, the project aims to:

• Create online materials to raise awareness and support for inclusive youth mobility.
